Explore Greenwich on Foot: Three Must-Try Walking Routes
Whether driving through town, exploring the back country estates or sitting by the water, Greenwich is a town that encourages exploration while being easy on the eyes in every way while doing so. From scenic coastal paths to charming downtown strolls and lush, wooded trails, we have it all right here at our fingertips. And despite it being November (!) these high temperatures give us all a chance to get a few extra steps in before it gets too chilly. For those yearning for a little bit of nature: grab a coffee (or a friend!), slap those sneakers on and let’s skip into three of my favorite walking routes in town.
1. Greenwich Avenue Stroll
Let’s start with the ultimate go-to: Greenwich Avenue. This is more than just a walk—it’s an experience. Begin at the top of the Avenue by the Greenwich Library and head down toward the water, soaking in the charm of each boutique, café, and gallery along the way. Stop at a local favorite, like Coffee Café Roasters, for your caffeine fix, or pop into one of the boutique shops for a unique find.
Once you reach the end of the Avenue, take a breather at the nearby Bruce Park, where you’ll find peaceful trails and plenty of green space. You can also pop into the newly renovated Bruce Museum while you are here! If you’re here during the holidays, you’ll get the added treat of festive lights and décor that turn the Avenue into a little winter wonderland. This route is all about savoring the local vibe and discovering something new around every corner.
2. Tod’s Point Coastal Loop
For a dose of fresh salt air and breathtaking views, nothing beats a walk at Tod’s Point (Greenwich Point Park). Start at the main entrance and take the loop around the point. You’ll pass sandy beaches, rugged rock formations, and scenic lookouts over the Long Island Sound.
Midway, you can stop by the Innis Arden Cottage for a bit of history or enjoy a quiet moment on one of the benches overlooking the water. This walk is beautiful any time of year, but it’s especially magical at sunrise or sunset when the light plays over the water. Don’t forget your camera—this route is Greenwich’s natural beauty at its finest.
3. Audubon Greenwich Trail Walk
If you’re craving a nature escape, head to the Audubon Greenwich for a walk that feels miles away from the everyday hustle. The Audubon Center offers miles of trails that wind through meadows, forests, and wetlands, with each turn revealing another hidden gem of Connecticut’s native landscape.
Start with the Main Sanctuary Trail, which takes you past scenic ponds and leads to the backcountry woodlands, where you’ll likely spot birds, deer, and more. There’s a quiet, restorative quality to this walk that’s perfect for clearing your mind. Plus, the Audubon often has events and programs, so check their schedule before heading over for a chance to learn about the local flora and fauna.
Greenwich offers so much beauty to explore, and each of these walking routes has a unique personality and charm. So whether you’re in the mood for a downtown stroll, coastal breeze, or forest retreat, we’ve got the perfect path for you right here in Greenwich!
