I truly cannot think of another food item that people literally travel remarkable distances for and attach a fond memory to all the while having the same taste consistently over the multiple decades since its introduction. For my family this is what the hot dogs from Walter’s Hot Dogs represents.
After bringing my best friend and great aunt Dodi (age 92) a hot dog from Walter’s for lunch the other day her reaction alone was well worth the round trip to Mamaroneck. Since childhood Dodi has adored Walter’s and has cherished the memories of enjoying their special hot dogs with her family. Given that Dodi no longer drives she was beside herself when I brought her a Walter’s hot dog for lunch, it had been over fifteen years since she last had one. As I watched her unwrap the hot dog and take her first bite she closed her eyes and sat quietly. A few moments later she began reminiscing, sharing memories and funny stories from all of her younger years when Walter’s was a frequent stop for her. Aside from the delicious taste it is memories like these that separate Walter’s from anywhere else.
Aside from the memories that inevitably launch from a pit stop at Walter’s their story and continued evolution makes it a top ‘must visit’ destination – here’s why.
If you are from this area or within a 100 mile radius the chances of hearing about, if not experiencing, the straight up deliciousness of Walter’s Hot Dogs in Mamaroneck are pretty high. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Walter’s let me give you a quick brief: since 1919 Walter’s has dominated the hot dog business and has served as a local roadside landmark serving from an art deco pagoda since 1928. Serving hot dogs & assorted comfort eats the secret golden recipe of what makes their dogs so divine remains to still be a wonder and kept safely within the family. As the business has evolved and has been passed along within the family they have been sure to keep the integrity of strictly sticking to their hot dog specialty (fries etc too but hot dogs are their thing!) Recently Walter’s has announced that they will be opening a second location in Stamford and most recently they launched a food truck to cater any occasion (dreamy!) But what truly sets Walter’s aside is the memory they provide.
With an unforgettable establishment to begin with the entire experience of waiting in line, reading postcards that are framed along the buildings exterior sent from Walter’s loyalists all over the world and enjoying their unmatched hot dogs is one that will stick with you.
