Engine Room: For the ultimate best in burgers and Bloody Mary’s, the Engine Room is ideal. Seriously, not only is it a local favorite for all surrounding towns as well as local colleges in the area, but you will fall in love at first bite. It is located in the Lathrop Marine Engine building with a very rustic vibe, also overlooking the Mystic River, and they serve crafted beers on tap as well as “the area’s largest bourbon selection” and a great list of wines and craft cocktails. It is American comfort with a twist, and if you come for brunch, you can enjoy their mouthwatering make-your-own Bloody Mary bar. On the menu, you can choose from “first things first”, bar bites, big salads, dry aged beef burgers, sandwiches, “not your mamas cookin”, front porch classics, sides, and milkshakes. Some personal favorites include the mushroom Mae burger, chicken n’ waffles, baked mac and cheese, chopped salad, Randy’s double stack, and so much more. S&P Oyster Co.: To get the New England seafood fix you know you’ve been craving, head to S&P Oyster Co. next! Offering a wide array of appetizers, salads, soups, and classic lunch and dinner items, you will find something for everyone on this menu and feel the New England sea breeze in your hair with each bite. Their appetizers range anywhere from oysters on the half shell, littleneck clams, jumbo shrimp, and more, and for the main dish, you can choose from pulled pork, chicken tostadas, seafood fra diavolo, fish tacos, chilled lobster roll, wood grilled swordfish, S&P seafood pasta, and beyond. Not to mention, they offer specific menus for children, vegetarian, and gluten free dietary needs, and their dessert menu to finish off your meal will send you spinning.
Bravo Bravo: Still not full? For something a little fancier, head to Bravo Bravo next. Open for lunch and dinner, their elegant essence and delicious menus are the perfect place for an upscale food escapade. For appetizers, they offer lobster quesadillas, shrimp bruschetta, sirloin Carpaccio, and more; salads on the menu include antipasto, crispy artichoke and arugula, penne pasta salad, among others; and finally, some entrees are various grilled pizzas, lunch wraps, and hot meals like linguine and clams, champagne risotto, stuffed veal, osso bucco, cioppiono, to name a few. Mystic Aquarium: We couldn’t visit Mystic without stopping at the Mystic Aquarium, duh! Famous for its amazing celebration of sea life and the many educational opportunities it provides, Mystic Aquarium brings sea life and research to the surrounding community and beyond, striving to bring awareness of conservation and exhibitry to all who are interested in the amazing ocean world that surrounds us. Their mission is simple: “to inspire people to care for and protect our ocean planet through conservation, education and research”. You heard it here first. Not to mention, it is so fun to explore the grounds with family and friends, and visiting the aquarium will be sure to be a memorable afternoon! When you visit, you can view African penguins, beluga whales, frogs, seals, sea lions, and so much more, not to mention their various theaters and additional exhibits on site. For a day of educational fun, especially with kids, this is ideal!
