For those who may not remember from History class, Bastille Day commemorates the day in France in which the working populous stormed the Bastille or Fortress and got ahold of their country’s weapons and munitions in an effort to defend themselves in the midst of their political separation from the Catholic Church party and the French aristocracy. The common and hard-working people of France were essentially fed up with not having a voice, not having a say in what happens in their country, and not being in control of their own lives as French citizens. Thus, there was a brewing revolution amongst the people, which also resulted in the siege of the Bastille and the release of innocent prisoners. After demands were expressed, the French people (with heavy involvement from the women!) had taken back their country, which started what we know today as the French Revolution.
Thus, Bastille Day is celebrated around the world as the day that France essentially became a democratic nation that was governed by the voice of the people of France, so July 14th is a very special day for anyone who truly values the soul and heart of Democracy. Come join the folks at Versailles Bistro on Greenwich Ave as they honor this glorious and memorable day in French history with a menu that is fit for a Francophile!
