When family and friends come to town, the first question is always where they should stay. Over years of hosting — and plenty of visits of my own to each of these properties — I've landed on four go-to answers that cover the whole range, from family-friendly to romantic, budget-conscious to splurge. Greenwich has a hotel for every kind of guest, from the in-laws who appreciate the finer things to the cousins traveling with kids. Here are the four, and exactly who each one is best for.
Greenwich has a hotel for every kind of guest, from the in-laws who appreciate the finer things to the cousins traveling with kids.
OLD GREENWICH — Hyatt Regency Greenwich, best for families with kids: Yes, Hyatt is a big hotel chain, but this one is different, and it's the one I send my own relatives with young kids to without hesitation. Tucked away on the far eastern side of town, right near the Stamford border, the property has undergone a major renovation, including beautifully updated guest rooms, new dining options in its impressive indoor atrium, and a luxury 40-seat movie theater complete with heated reclining seats. Add an indoor pool, and this is easily one of the most family-friendly options on the list.
RIVERSIDE — The J House, best for couples or guests who want a little scene: Modern, trendy, and a little more boutique, The J House is all about contemporary luxury, with high-tech rooms featuring mirrors that double as televisions, automated lighting, and other clever gadgets. Downstairs is Tony's at the J House, the lively, delicious restaurant that has become a town favorite in its own right, and where I've booked more than one dinner reservation for out-of-town friends. A great pick for couples or adults who appreciate a little scene with their stay.
GREENWICH — Delamar Greenwich Harbor, best for guests who want waterfront, white-glove luxury: From the harbor views to the beautiful rooms and even the toiletries, Delamar is where you send guests who appreciate the finer things. It's more sophisticated retreat than kid-centric hotel, making it especially lovely for parents, in-laws, or couples. And the real bonus? L'escale, one of Greenwich's favorite restaurants, is right downstairs, with waterfront dining and absolutely no need to get in the car.
GREENWICH — Stanton House Inn, best for guests who want old-world Greenwich charm: There's something about staying in an actual home that makes this the most charming pick of all. Family-owned and tucked into the heart of Greenwich, Stanton House Inn is a true bed-and-breakfast, complete with individually decorated rooms, afternoon tea, and the kind of warmth you just don't get from a big hotel. It's cozy, personal, and about as old-world Greenwich as it gets, and the location — walkable to town — is hard to beat.
