There is a particular look that turns up in Greenwich bedrooms, and for years I couldn't work out where it came from: layered bedding, a block print pillow that clearly did not come from a catalog, hemstitched sheets, a bolster nobody else seems to have. The shop opened more than twenty years ago and has outlasted most of what opened around it. House Beautiful has named it one of the best home stores in the country, which is national press most Greenwich retailers never get. Locals mostly call it the linen store, and that undersells it by a wide margin: bedding, tabletop, gifts and made-to-order work all come out of one storefront downtown.
The part that matters most is that you can order custom, and that is the sentence that separates this place from every home department you have browsed on a screen. Bring in a fabric, the measurements, a color you cannot find anywhere, or a bed that is not a standard size, and they will make it. Monogramming is available too. Why I'd go in person, and what to bring. Linens are a touch purchase. A photograph cannot tell you the weight of a sateen or how a quilt drapes over the end of a bed, and this is a category where the difference between fine and beautiful is entirely in the hand. If you're starting a custom order, walk in with the three things that make the conversation fast: your exact mattress or bed measurements, a fabric swatch or the color you're chasing, and a photo of the room in daylight. The staff here know their inventory in a way that has gotten rare — describe the light and the furniture you're working around, and they'll pull things you would not have found on your own. That is not a service you get from a search bar.
Worth putting back on the list. Stores that have been in a town for two decades tend to become invisible to the people who live there. You drive past, you register that it exists, you keep going. There are two good windows. Go in the fall ahead of the holidays, when the tabletop turns over and the gift wall is at its best. Or go in a quiet stretch of late summer, when you can take your time and someone can actually walk you through it — which, if you're ordering custom, is exactly the eight weeks of lead time you were going to need anyway.
