Have you ever spread a Burt’s Bees product across your lips and felt a chill go down your spine as the minty tingle reached your nostrils? Do you rely on their tinted lip balm as much as we do? Especially this summer, when Burt’s Bees products allow us to carry refreshing color and moisture in the pocket of our beach bags, we grateful GG’s bid a somber farewell to Burt Shavitz, former beekeeper, co-founder of Burt’s Bees, and owner of the bearded visage sketched onto every package of Burt’s Bees products. The publicity-shy Shavitz was 80 years old, and rumored to have reclusive tendencies, although he continued to make the occasional appearance to support the company, which was taken over by his partner Roxanne Quimby in 1994. She said in an email to The Associated Press that “Burt was an enigma; my mentor and my muse. I am deeply saddened”, as are we- there’s something heartbreaking about the fact that the face smiling out from our lip balm is no longer smiling in a remote corner of Maine, “in a cluttered house with no running water”, according to the Huffington Post. The company released a somber statement, and remembered Burt kindly: “If there is one thing we will remember from Burt’s life, in our fast-paced, high-tech culture, it’s to never lose sight of our relationship with nature”.
