More About Laura:
I was born and raised in the beautiful town of Greenwich, CT and aside from a four year detour of living in Washington D.C while I attended college (The George Washington University) I have been a Greenwich Girl my whole life. From a very young age writing has been something that I have loved to do, it has always come naturally and easily, at such an ease in fact that I never considered the option of it becoming a career. As time went on the combination of being the youngest of four girls and growing up in a town that continues to flourish made it impossible to not share my observations of luxury lifestyle and all things beautiful around me. The thing is: my story is not one of those where fairytales where you just happen to fall into ‘it’ and then ‘it’ is happily ever after – it has been a lot of hard work, lots of laughs, and endless tears and equally endless triumphs along the way.
I studied marketing and finance in college because I couldn’t decide which I loved more (to be the next Gordon Gekko or to aspire to run Sachi & Sachi – who could make such a decision?) As I followed the path of finance I worked in various roles and by the age of 27 landed a job as a trader of global equities = no offense to the job but… I cried every single day. I loved the pace but hated the attitude, this could not be what adulating meant. I was thinking of the latest restaurant that opened and that handbag that I would sell an organ for while I was supposed to be focusing on global economies: a very scary thought.
In 2011 Hurricane Irene hit and my best friend and I started a three day blog – a tongue in cheek approach that offered comic relief during a time when everyone was nervous that we were going to be blown away. We paraded around town with glitter microphones interviewing people on how they were preparing for Irene and within three days we had over 10,000 hits to our ‘blog.’ Only we were notified of this huge reach by a local newspaper who called us on day two asking where we came from, how we got as many views as we did and who was astounded when we said we didn’t even know how to see how many views we got, we were merely doing this for fun and posting on Facebook…he then explained to us exactly what analytics were.
Within four days I received five free lance writing jobs and by that Monday I officially left my finance job, and the very nice salary with it, to pursue my passion of writing. I spent the first six months out of finance doing hospice with a woman who was among the most admirable I have ever met – her will to live and help others encouraged me to have the bravery to share my words with the world. During this time I wrote a book called Greenwich Girl – and after being rejected over thirty-five times for “not having an online presence” I created Greenwich Girl, the website and now magazine, in 2012.
So here we are five years later and what started as a fun hobby with a friend led to the creation of a ‘blog’ (strictly to increase my online presence with the hopes of my book being published) which then became a hyper local marketing platform and is now a digital magazine. As time goes on my personal growth is reflected in the growth of the brand.
For those of you who actually are taking the time to read this and learn a little more about the girl behind the brand: I truly thank you. It is very easy to see this all as simply ‘very glamorous,’ and while that is the brand, and admittedly it certainly can be glamorous at times, the GG brand is also a very demanding effort that I work relentlessly at. I hope that by sharing my story I can maybe give someone out there the courage to follow their dreams and pursue their passion, help encourage someone to push through the fear of what others will think aside and to just jump in because it IS worth it. Waking up everyday with the challenge to keep going and the excitement of still loving what you do is a priceless gift. I love what I do and I take it very seriously. I by no means claim to be a guru on all things luxury lifestyle but I do eat, sleep and dream of sharing anything and everything that I find interesting with my readers. I am a down to earth girl at heart and truly believe that just because you care about looking good or what is trending doesn’t mean you have to be a shallow person. So as I continue to see where this infinite world of writing, creating and documenting every second of it leads me I hope you take my words with the sense of humor, genuine heart and curious nature that they come from.
