I 100% love the holidays. Any excuse to over indulge in all things, from retail therapy to booze to tear fests and procrastinating, makes me jump with joy. But what doesn’t make me so thrilled are things like the fucking elf on the fucking shelf. Really? Great message for the youth of today. There are so many things wrong with this Elf that I don’t even know where to begin. My confusion as to why parents would go to even more trouble, as if they aren’t stretched for time between shopping wrapping cooking and being parents as it is, now its a game of FOMO with an ELF ON A SHELF?! Not to mention: is it me, or is this completely contradictory? This menace Elf gets to soar around, flying and swing on things, be bad, and the entire time, he is just a threat to rat your kids out!? It actually seems a bit rough on children. These kids, who are already learning right from wrong (lets hope) from their parents, now have to worry about some twerp tattle tale ELF going to Santa?
I recently heard of wrapping fake boxes under the tree and tossing them in the fire when the little one misbehaves. Yes, it is a little cruel, and no, I am not saying I would do it, but the tease of an Elf who gets away with murder is scarier than any monster under the bed that kids tend to fear as it is. And then, these parents spend ions convincing their kids that there is nothing to be afraid of, which is hypocritical, borderline cruel, and WAY worse in my book. Not exactly the morals I would want to be raising my kids with.
And lastly, most of all, in a world full of social media and horrific things, superficial standards and expectations, why on earth does something as simple as behaving well – what should be a given expectation of every child – have to be a bribe and so complex? It is disheartening to say the least.
